Multiple Sclerosis: The Basics You Need to Know

Multiple Sclerosis is a debilitating disease that can cause a wide variety of disabilities. Because symptoms of multiple sclerosis can be similar to other disease, normal signs of aging, and common conditions that affect the elderly, many seniors affected by this disease go un-diagnosed, which can prevent someone from getting the proper treatments. It is important for seniors and caregivers to know the signs and symptoms of MS so that they can have conversations with their doctors.

What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?
MS is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system. It affects the myelin sheaths around nerves which causes problems in communication between the brain and the body. MS is a progressive disease with symptoms beginning mildly and becoming worse over time.

What is the impact of MS?
Because MS damages the nervous system, a wide variety of issues can result. Most of the problems are unpredictable and range from mild to severe. Common issues are vision loss, lack of muscle control, and cognitive issues.

How is MS treated?
At this time there is no cure for MS, although there are treatments which can reduce the progression of the disease and minimize the effects. Therapies and rehabilitation options can also greatly improve quality of life for those suffering for MS.
