Supporting Alert Seniors Through Physical Challenges

Coping with the Physical Aging Process while Mentally Young:
Struggling with physical challenges can be very hard for seniors and result in the development of anxiety and depression. It is always important to not only support and protect the physical well-being but also the emotional and mental well-being of seniors dealing with such difficulties. Some helpful coping mechanisms are:

  • Adopting hobbies that require mental agility but little physical effort (puzzles, coloring, etc)
  • Using technology and tools to adapt to physical limitations
  • Retaining independence in whatever ways are safely possible
  • Regularly engaging socially without the demands of a physical activity
  • Having access to transportation if unable to independently drive
  • Participation in reasonable physical activities to help prevent further limitation (Stepping On classes, senior yoga, etc)

Preventing Depression:
Depression can increase mortality rates and have a detrimental effect on overall health in all demographics, but especially among seniors. Since having physical limitations can contribute to depression it is important to help seniors prevent depression. Steps caregivers and loved ones can take to help prevent depression can include:

  • Regular social engagements
  • Mentally stimulating activities
  • Participating in purposeful hobbies
  • Receiving counseling
  • Adaptations that promote independence
  • A positive attitude
  • Supportive loved ones present

For mentally strong seniors, having a positive outlook and perspective can make coping with a physical challenge or limitation easier. Caregivers can remind seniors of the people who love and value them in their lives as well as help them focus on their purpose and pleasures. Offer a perspective of gratitude and hope rather than focusing on limitations.
